Located on the western edge of the Sahara desert at central Mauritania in northwest Africa, there is a giant circle called Richat Structure, whose diameter ranges as long as 38km. It is made of quartzite.
Lake Retba, Senegal.
  • Pedro Tinoco
Lake Retba or Lac Rose lies north of the Cap Vert peninsula of Senegal, north east of Dakar. It is so named for its pink waters, caused by an algae, Dunaliella Salina, in the water. The color is particularly visible during the dry season. The lake is also known for its high salt content, which, like that of the Dead Sea, allows people to float easily.
The Earth and Moon. Photo #37 by NASA // During its flight, the Galileo spacecraft returned images of the Earth and Moon. Separate images of the Earth and Moon were combined to generate this view. The Galileo spacecraft took the images in 1992 on its way to explore the Jupiter system in 1995-97.
This up to 1000 years old snow has metamorphosed into highly pressurized glacier ice that contains almost no air bubbles. Thus it absorbs the visible light despite the scattered shortest blue fraction, giving it its distinct deep blue waved appearance. NASA have released this image of a huge solar flare near the edge of the Sun. It blew out a waving mass of erupting plasma that swirled and twisted over a 90-minute period on February 24. This event was captured in extreme ultraviolet light by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft . Some of the material blew out into space and other portions fell back to the surface. Because SDO images are super-HD, scientists are able to zoom in on the action and still see exquisite details. A similar flare on Valentine's Day caused concern about possible disruptions on Earth, although scientists suggest the latest eruption poses no threat. Picture: NASA/GSFC/SDO / Rex Features

Paolo Nespoli, an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, took this spectacular photograph of the perigee moon, or "Supermoon", as the moon was at its closest point to Earth since 1993 Picture: Paolo Nespoli/ESA/NASA
This image of the moon was photographed by the Expedition 28 crew aboard the International Space Station. The Earth transitions into the orange-coloured troposphere, the lowest and most dense portion of the Earth's atmosphere. The troposphere ends abruptly at the tropopause, which appears in the image as the sharp boundary between the orange and blue coloured atmosphere. The silvery-blue noctilucent clouds extend far above the Earth's troposphere.
The largest canyon in the Solar System cuts a wide swath across the face of Mars. Named Valles Marineris, the grand canyon extends over 3,000 kilometres long, spans as much as 600 kilometres across, and is as much as 8 kilometres deep. By comparison, Earth's Grand Canyon is 800 kilometres long, 30 kilometres across, and 1.8 kilometres deep. The origin of the Valles Marineris remains unknown, although a leading hypothesis holds that it started as a crack billions of years ago as the planet cooled. The above mosaic was created from over 100 images of Mars taken by Viking Orbiters in the 1970s.
A quintet of Saturn's moons come together in the Cassini spacecraft's field of view. Janus (179 km, or 111 miles across) is on the far left. Pandora (81 km, or 50 miles across) orbits between the A ring and the thin F ring near the middle of the image. Brightly reflective Enceladus (504 km, or 313 miles across) appears above the centre of the image. Saturn's second largest moon, Rhea (1,528 km, or 949 miles across), is bisected by the right edge of the image. The smaller moon Mimas (396 km, or 246 miles across) can be seen beyond Rhea also on the right side of the image.
This is the most complete look at the morphology of the far side of the moon to date. The global mosaic is comprised of over 15,000 Wide Angle Camera images acquired between November 2009 and February 2011. Picture: NASA/Goddard/Arizona State University / Rex Features
This is the space suit worn by Apollo 17 commander Eugene Cernan, the last human being to set foot on the Moon. Side note: I knew these suits were heavy. I had not realized how heavy. With 26 layers of material in the suit, a portable life-support system strapped on, and other mechanical systems attached, the whole thing weighed in at 185 pounds on Earth.
This stunning NASA photo has recently resurfaced and is making the rounds online. While speculation about the picture varies, we contacted the NASA media research office and they dug up the original for us with an explanation. The photo is an overlay of shots highlighting India's burgeoning population over several years. The white lights were the only illumination visible before 1992. The blue lights appeared in 1992. The green lights in 1998. And the red lights appeared in 2003. Current speculation suggests the lights are a result of the Hindu celebration Diwali, or the celebration of lights, held from mid-October to mid-November, but NASA was unable to confirm what time of year the shots were taken.
